Bosch Unveils Scalable Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Systems for Green Hydrogen Economy, Targeting Data Centers and Industrial Applications

Alexander Cordes from Bosch discusses the company's movement towards a green hydrogen economy, focusing on solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) systems. Bosch, traditionally known for household and automotive products, is heavily investing in hydrogen technology across production, storage, distribution, and usage. The company is developing electrolysis stacks for H2 generation and equipment for H2 gas stations while working on PEM fuel cells for automobiles and SOFCs as part of their €500 million annual investment. The SOFC system presented boasts an electrical efficiency of around 60%, reaching up to 90% with heat utilization. These scalable plug-and-play units are robust with low maintenance costs due to no moving parts. Initially using natural gas but adaptable to hydrogen when available, these systems cater mainly to data centers requiring reliable power solutions that scale with demand. Bosch's current focus includes building urban quarters and industrial applications where electricity needs are high. Despite not starting full-scale production yet—expected soon—the company has over a hundred operational units in various sectors demonstrating practicality and feasibility. In terms of cost-competitiveness against existing grid rates today’s development ensures future mass scaling will maintain economic viability. In response to inquiries about downsizing technology for residential use within the next decade or two amidst widespread natural gas heating reliance Alexander Cordes confirmed long-term plans include smaller kilowatt-range solutions already explored by other market players.

Photovoltaic prices have fallen continuously in recent years - a trend that should translate into a growing market for off-grid solutions. Declining costs are crucial for rural electrification in particular, making sustainable energy supply economically viable in remote regions. However, so far many of these price advantages have not yet reached the people that need them most. Do existing framework conditions to foster rural electrification still work in this new market reality? Which measures are needed to ensure that cost reductions reach our target group? This session discusses strategies for improving the availability of low-cost off-grid solutions, financing and innovative business models. A look at successful practical examples shows which political, economic and technological levers need to be pulled to make off-grid PV accessible on a large scale.
