Ionisys Advances PFAS-Free Electrolysis Technology, Seeks Collaborations for Rapid Development

Dr. Joey Disch, a senior scientist at Ionisys, introduces the company and its work on perfluorinated substance-free (PFAS-free) membranes for electrolysis applications. Founded in September 2022 as a spin-off from the University of Freiburg and Hanschicke Applied Research Institute, Ionisys has grown to 25 employees. The company focuses on creating membrane electrode assemblies for fuel cells and electrolyzers with an emphasis on eliminating PFAS materials due to their environmental risks, toxicity, high costs, and recycling difficulties. Ionisys aims to replace PFAS components in every part of electrochemical cells—membranes, gas diffusion layers, and catalyst layers—with hydrocarbon-based alternatives that offer lower gas permeability. This change can enhance energy efficiency by reducing cell resistance through thinner membranes. Currently in development phase but achieving promising results such as meeting EU performance targets ahead of schedule with prototype designs already showing improved efficiency over traditional methods. Ionisys is ramping up production capabilities while seeking industry collaborations to accelerate commercial readiness.
