Prateek Banerjee, a senior consultant at ILF Consulting Engineers, addresses the Green Hydrogen Forum about the challenges and future prospects of green fuel project development.

Prateek Banerjee, a senior consultant at ILF Consulting Engineers, delivered a presentation on the challenges faced in green hydrogen project development. The discussion was divided into four chapters: an introduction, an overview of various challenges, contributions from ILF to this sector, and future prospects. Green hydrogen initiatives began with global decarbonization policies around 2019. Currently, about 50+ countries are actively pursuing these strategies through policy initiatives and demonstration projects. Banerjee highlighted the different forms of hydrogen fuel—liquid hydrogen (used mainly in rocket propulsion), ammonia (largely for fertilizer production), and methanol—with their respective energy efficiencies being quite low due to lack of direct combustion methods. The sectors requiring decarbonized fuels include transport (aviation, maritime), industrial applications (refineries producing ammonia), power generation/heating systems, and fertilizers. The International Energy Agency posits that there must be a fivefold increase in green hydrogen consumption to meet net-zero targets—a significant challenge given current usage levels. Bilateral partnerships between nations like Germany's agreements with Ukraine and Japan's collaborations with South Korea have led to giga-scale projects intended to boost capacity significantly. Yet only three such projects are under construction globally—one in Saudi Arabia’s Neom city and two in China. Operational hurdles include harnessing renewables efficiently due to inconsistent wind/solar patterns affecting energy distribution models crucial for consistent power supply essential for green hydrogen production.

Photovoltaic prices have fallen continuously in recent years - a trend that should translate into a growing market for off-grid solutions. Declining costs are crucial for rural electrification in particular, making sustainable energy supply economically viable in remote regions. However, so far many of these price advantages have not yet reached the people that need them most. Do existing framework conditions to foster rural electrification still work in this new market reality? Which measures are needed to ensure that cost reductions reach our target group? This session discusses strategies for improving the availability of low-cost off-grid solutions, financing and innovative business models. A look at successful practical examples shows which political, economic and technological levers need to be pulled to make off-grid PV accessible on a large scale.
