RAP Presents Case Study on Smart Charging Benefits for Electrifying Freight Corridor in India, Emphasizing System Cost Reductions and Sustainability

RAP (Regulatory Assistance Project) is a global group of experts focusing on clean energy transitions, particularly in the transport sector's electrification and its interaction with the power grid. A member from RAP's Europe team presents findings from a global project examining smart charging benefits across four regions: the US, Europe, India, and China. The discussion emphasizes India's case study on electric truck charging. The presentation highlights that while electric vehicle sales are increasing globally—with China leading in electric trucks—smart charging remains crucial for sustainability and efficiency. Smart charging involves optimizing EVs' charge times to align with low electricity costs without user inconvenience, thus avoiding costly grid upgrades and better utilizing renewable energy sources like solar and wind. The Indian case study focuses on a key freight corridor between Delhi and Jaipur (~300 kilometers). ICCT has projected future growth in electric truck usage along this route. Two scenarios were modeled: one where trucks charge overnight at depots; another where they charge during off-peak traffic hours (early morning/late afternoon). These configurations impact system costs differently by affecting utility profits through optimized truck fleet charging strategies used to reduce overall system expenses. Overall, the aim is to quantify infrastructure needs for EVs/trucks by 2035-2040 across these regions using projections to identify optimal locations for chargers based on expected demand patterns. This analysis shows significant potential cost savings via smart grid use benefiting all electricity users—not just those owning EVs or trucks—thus underscoring societal advantages of electrification coupled with strategic smart-charging implementations.
