EDAG, an international service provider specializing in vehicle and product development for various industries, has made significant strides in battery system development through its Energy Systems Department. The process traditionally took about 48 months due to the need for extensive testing and prototyping phases (A-sample and B-sample) because of limited initial knowledge on battery systems and cell chemistry. However, leveraging advancements such as virtual validation—testing at cell and module levels with digital simulations—and automating processes have reduced this time frame significantly. To further accelerate production to meet growing market demands while ensuring safety standards like ECR 100 revision requirements are met, EDAG integrated automated software enhanced by AI. This automation allows rapid adaptation during both A-sample and B-sample phases using data from digital twins of cells for simulations involving vibration analysis, thermal management, crash-crush tests among others. As a result, they’ve reduced the overall development cycle down to 24 months without compromising quality or safety. In collaboration with Cineera's tools—which automate design space fixing using database inputs—the team can optimize battery packaging efficiently by simulating driving cycles automatically. Consequently, only necessary prototypes undergo physical testing in later stages thus reducing costs drastically while maintaining rigorous safety protocols against issues like thermal runaway within batteries. This innovative approach demonstrates how technology integration streamlines complex engineering processes without sacrificing essential regulatory compliance or end-product reliability.
