Rainer Gehrung of Home Power Solutions Discusses Cutting-Edge Hydrogen Storage Technology for Renewable Energy Independence

Rainer Gehrung, CFO and CSO of Home Power Solutions (HPS), delivered the third impulse lecture. With extensive experience in financial management and strategy development, Gehrung co-founded multiple companies including Steinbeis Hochschule Berlin and Smart Solutions for Industries. He introduced HPS as a pioneering German company enabling energy storage from photovoltaic (PV) systems for use across seasons. Gehrung emphasized the immense potential of solar energy, noting that while it’s abundant during summer months, it falls short in winter. To address this imbalance, HPS developed PKEA technology to store excess summer PV energy as hydrogen for winter use. This method offers substantial independence from utilities with a storage capacity up to 1,500 kilowatt hours—significantly higher than traditional batteries. The system is CO2-free and fully transparent since users rely solely on their generated energy without ambiguity about its source. Primarily catering to private households of varied demographics keen on modernizing or embracing new technologies, HPS aims to revolutionize home energy consumption through sustainable practices.

Off-grid solar systems are often the least expensive option for rural electrification. Solar home systems can power individual households, while mini-grids can supply entire villages. Each comes with its own advantages, disadvantages, and challenges. The aim of this session is to explore challenges as well as success stories. It takes well-functioning components such as battery systems, charge management and inverters to make projects successful. Proper system sizing, maintenance and repair management, as well as a robust financial concept are also necessary. If one of these elements is missing, the electrification will not be sustainable. This session will focus on the aspects mentioned above. The speakers will present successful and unsuccessful approaches and discuss what can be learned from them.
