"Iberdrola's Smart Solutions Team Showcases Advanced Energy Management for Sustainable Homes Using Heat Pumps and Photovoltaic Systems"

Vanessa Castro, from Iberdrola Smart Climate department, presented at a session focusing on solutions to decarbonize heating and hot water. She highlighted Iberdrola's commitment to developing smart home technologies since 2003, including their Advanced Smart Assistant application which optimizes energy consumption based on photovoltaic production and thermal inertia. Vanessa emphasized the significant role of buildings in greenhouse gas emissions (36% in Europe) and stated that 80% of homes in Spain have poor energy efficiency ratings. She discussed the importance of heat pumps as a sustainable alternative to fossil fuel boilers for residential, commercial, and industrial sectors due to their versatility across heating, cooling, and water heating needs. According to EU guidelines, heat pumps are crucial for achieving higher energy efficiency using renewables while lowering emissions. Vanessa illustrated this with a case study from Alicante where replacing a gas boiler with an efficient heat pump system upgraded the home's energy certificate from F to A. The installation included photovoltaic panels which significantly reduced overall electricity costs despite an initial investment of around €13K.

Our European energy system is undergoing a major transformation, moving towards decentralization with increased penetration of distributed energy resources (DERs) connected to the grid, such as PV solar, battery storage, and EVs. While DERs provide clear benefits such as limiting costs, reducing CO2 emissions, and helping to empower consumers, there are still challenges to overcome to develop DERs to their full potential. This session will focus on best practices and innovative projects, both from a grid and user perspective (e.g. energy communities) and we will discuss how the regulatory framework can be improved to facilitate the penetration of DERs and active participation from consumers.
