The Future of Green Hydrogen in Brazil: Sustainability, Competitiveness and Challenges in the Energy Transition

Camila Ramos, CEO of Sela Clean Energy Latin America, took part in a panel on green hydrogen in Brazil and highlighted the growth of renewable initiatives with 76 projects in 14 states. The company is involved in financial consultancy for the energy transition and has introduced the ELSIO-X index to evaluate the costs of green hydrogen. Three factors drive this interest: favourable regulation, abundant energy and adequate electricity infrastructure. Brazil stands out for its competitiveness due to the Export Processing Zones (EPZs) that offer attractive tax incentives. Studies indicate that green ammonia can achieve economic parity with traditional methods used in the fertiliser industry. With a new Hydrogen Law recently passed favouring less polluting technologies, there is significant potential to develop a sophisticated sustainable industry in line with the Paris Agreement while promoting local jobs by 2030 through this promising energy transition. The falling cost of solar modules has significantly reduced solar energy prices by 2023, benefiting future hydrogen projects by lowering their expected operating costs by 2050. Initiatives such as Atlas Agro's aim to decarbonise industries dependent on fossil natural gas by using green hydrogen in Brazil and the USA.
