Challenges and Opportunities in Energy Storage: Innovation, Sustainability and Expansion in the Brazilian Market

The panel discussion brought together experts from the energy storage sector, highlighting global growth and applications in Brazil. New Charge led discussions on utility scale projects and software for intelligent battery management, with 96 gigawatt hours recently installed worldwide. Brazilian projections indicate significant potential by 2030. Strategies such as peak shaving via software integrated with batteries were discussed for tariff optimization. Alexandre Gomes from Matrix highlighted the solar evolution in Brazil, forecasting a robust DG platform reaching 500 megawatts soon, focusing on reducing energy costs using BESS developed with Huawei. Micropower stands out by offering “energy as a service”, optimizing energy costs while promoting sustainability through strategic partnerships and innovative solutions such as virtual power plants orchestrated by distributed assets together with the Elipse System in partnership with Energisa. The text also addresses Brazilian regulatory challenges in distributed generation (DG), frequency stability and cybersecurity needed in an interconnected future predominantly in renewables, as well as the financial opportunities associated with electrical services offered by PCS (Power Conversion Systems).
