Recording of Wednesday, June 19, 2024 | The smarter E Europe 2024 | Conference Program | Language: English | Duration: 13:29 .
Lukas Schriewer the speaker from P3 shared insights based on their extensive experience in technology and management consulting, particularly focusing on e-mobility projects across Europe, the US, and Asia. P3 specializes in high power charging (HPC) infrastructure and smart energy solutions. The talk highlighted the complexity of ensuring interoperability and reliability in HPC ecosystems due to numerous variables: over 120 EV models, various Mobile Service Providers (MSPs), Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) models, as well as more than 200 operators maintaining these chargers across Europe alone. Emerging use cases such as plug-and-charge systems and credit card authentication are adding layers of complexity alongside new regulatory requirements like uptime KPIs already introduced in places like the UK. To address these challenges, three key drivers were identified: ecosystem Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), robust communication infrastructures throughout the ecosystem—not just single interfaces—and standardized data harmonization among vendors. Practical experiences included analyzing uptimes from selected Charge Point Operators (CPOs) across different markets which showed varying success rates but indicated overall improvement over recent years. Despite advancements leading to an average success rate of around 82% for charging attempts—up from previous years—the need remains significant for improved testing and validation to reach higher reliability standards crucial for customer satisfaction. Projects focused on enhancing communication protocols like OCPP have been underway at P3 to build more resilient connections between chargers and CPO backends or IT systems essential for sustained progress in this evolving field.

This interactive session looks at the crucial role of common standards for the development, introduction and scaling of the e-mobility ecosystem. Universal interoperability of electric vehicles, electric charging infrastructure and associated digital services need common standards based on rigid conformance testing and certification. Agreeing on common standards for physical, electric and electronic interfaces is in everyone's interest and will promote efficient product development and series production. Recognized certifications will create a market-pull and commercial incentive for common standards.
