Iberdrola Highlights the Need for Accelerated Electrification and Investment in Renewable Energy Networks to Meet Green Deal Goals

Iberdrola is a multinational energy company and the world's leading wind energy producer. It operates extensive networks in Brazil, the USA, the UK, and Spain while also providing energy services including being Charge Point Operators (CPO) with 6,000 public charging points in Spain alone. Emphasizing sustainable transport, Iberdrola believes that road transport electrification presents significant opportunities for reducing final energy consumption by up to three times by 2050 if light and heavy vehicles are fully electrified. This would eliminate tailpipe CO2 emissions entirely as well as other harmful air quality pollutants. The European Green Deal's impact extends beyond environmental benefits; it can drastically reduce fossil fuel imports—by about two million barrels per day by 2035—and save around €60 billion annually on trade balances. However, there's an urgency to accelerate demand electrification alongside rapidly advancing renewable energies to ensure coordinated growth. A shift in mindset towards anticipated investments over flat electricity demand growth is essential for this transition. Digitalization will play a crucial role due to its influence on system investment needs. As distribution systems are regulated businesses requiring pre-approved investments from regulatory bodies, defining strategic investments and ensuring attractive remuneration rates are vital to attracting necessary capital for infrastructure development aligned with EU transition goals. Investments needed in grids must triple by 2040 compared to current levels—a feat deemed achievable with proper strategy and coordination.
