Aneo and Coop Norway Collaborate to Electrify Diesel Truck Fleet at Trondheim Logistics Center, Achieving Significant Emission Reductions through Smart Charging Solutions

Ella-Lovise Hammervold Rørvik, a machine learning engineer at Aneo, discusses the company's efforts in renewable energy and electrification. Aneo, with over 70 years of experience in solar, hydro, and wind power production, aims to be a leader in the green shift by focusing on energy efficiency and electrification. In Norway, transportation accounts for one-fifth of greenhouse gas emissions; heavy vehicles contribute 35% of these emissions. Despite Norway's ambitious goals to reduce emissions from transportation by 50% by 2030, EV truck adoption remains low but is growing rapidly. Coop Norway sought Aneo’s expertise to analyze how their logistics center trucks could transition from diesel to electric. The study focused on Trondheim Logistics Center which logs approximately 3.5 million kilometers annually using five gigawatts post-building consumption. The analysis aligned with Coop's strategy; trucks were only charged at logistics centers while adhering to existing routes and worker schedules. Two key questions guided the research: how many routes can be driven by EV trucks and how smart charging reduces energy costs? An algorithm called Truck Flex was developed for route electrification assessment based on battery specs and schedule optimization aimed at reducing costs through smart charging techniques. From evaluating different scenarios—diesel versus varied charging setups—it was found that out of weekly kilometers driven (15,629), about half (7,238) could switch to EVs covering most routes effectively; this translates into significant emission reductions alongside cost benefits derived from optimized smart-charging solutions.
