After scaling back the plans for their first European car factory in Brandenburg, Tesla announced the cut of battery-pack assembly and plastic component production.
The construction plans for the factory in Gruenheide near Berlin had to be altered after difficulties with the sandy ground of the area. Also the concerns of local groups regarding the plant’s water needs were implemented; the new plans envisage a reduction of water use as well as other pile foundations. The building height is reduced by 29 feet.
The factory will have the capacity to assemble about 100,000 EV per year and challenges the German car manufacturers that are also expanding their offer if electric cars. While the project has not been approved definitively by German authorities and the latest public hearing on the remaining concerns was rescheduled to September due to the COVID-19 pandemic, officials have signaled Tesla CEO Elon Musk fast-tracking through German bureaucracy. Musk wants to start production in July 2021.
